Engaging Religious Leaders: A 2-Day Seminar on Safe Abortion Care.
Creative Actors Initiative for Development (CRAID) recently concluded a two-day Sensitization Seminar on Abortion Law and Policies in Oyo State, specifically designed for religious leaders across Christian and Islamic faiths. The seminar was held on the 2nd and 3rd of April, the aim of the seminar is to deepen religious leaders understanding of the issues relating to abortion and their roles in reducing abortion relation stigma and promoting access to safe abortion care in the state.
The seminar was declared open by the Honourable Commissioner for Justice in Oyo State. Discussions at the seminar centered on the current state of abortion laws, health sector involvement, and existing guidelines and policies in Oyo State, religious perspectives on sanctity of all life, and promotion of empathy among religious leaders. The seminar also witnessed a balanced discussion from both the scientific and faith perspectives. The sessions were facilitated by legal and health experts
There was a very open engagement among participants and the outcome of the seminar is the committment of the participants to be fully involved in spreading positive narrative and providing their congregations with appropriate information relating to abortion care in Oyo State and to continue advocating for the health and rights of women and girls.

Advocacy Visit to the Christian Association of Nigeria and League of Imams: Promoting Safe Abortion Through Compassionate Conversations.
We are delighted to share the remarkable experience of CRAID’s advocacy visit to the religious leaders in Oyo State. The visit to Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the League of Imams and Alfas was part of the Social Mobilization and Interactive Law Engagement (SMILE) project. This project is dedicated to creating an enabling environment for women and girls to access safe abortion care while fostering awareness, compassion, and understanding about reproductive rights.
The visit was both positive and heartwarming, showcasing an encouraging shift in mindset among religious leaders. It was particularly inspiring to witness their openness to dialogue and their willingness to explore a more compassionate and accommodating stance on the right to safe abortion.

Advocacy Visit to International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA): Promoting Safe Abortion Through Compassionate Conversations.
During this visit, there was a common understanding with regards the importance of considering the physical, mental and emotional well-being of women and girls when reviewing abortion-related policies.
The need for the creation of enabling environment where women can make informed decisions about their reproductive health without fear, shame, or guilt cannot be over-emphasized.
